Book - Pages 12 & 13

After court and our visit with Aiden, we went to lunch at The Cottage.  Some of us liked it, some thought it was okay.  It was Ian’s favorite because he got a big, old, plate-covering steak!

After lunch, Solomon took us to the Merkato – one of the largest markets in Africa.  He wouldn’t let us get out of the van.  Lots of people came up to the van to look at us, though!

A clothing “store” in the market.

These yellow jugs were used for water.

This was the strip in the market where khat was sold.  Khat is a drug that is leagal in Africa but illegal everywhere else.  According to Solomon, it is like a high-powered caffeine.  Most people use it to stay awake, others use it to lose weight.

These ladies were selling potatoes and various herbs.  They were spread out all over blankets on the ground.

Another clothing market.

This was a market-like a produce stand.  Our driver told us that Ethiopia grew all their own fruits and vegetables except for apples and olives, which have to be imported.
