Animals were just walking down the streets – along with the
millions of cars and people! There were several infected horses. If a person’s
horse got infected, they just let it go. These horses were just roaming around
town. Some were walking down the middle of a 4 lane highway. Solomon said they
did that to shoo away the flies. The most common animals were sheep, goats,
oxen, donkeys, and crazy horses. We didn’t see many non-infected horses. I’m
sure there were some – we just didn’t see many in town.
This was a business center – computer, printer, Internet.
All available – at a price. Kinko’s – Ethiopian style!
The blue and white cars were taxis. Ethiopian taxi drivers
make NY taxi drivers look like beginners!
These were a couple of houses. In some areas, they lined the
road.
New buildings like this one were being built all over town.
The scaffolding was the craziest thing we had ever seen. It was made from
Eucalyptus branches that were de-barked and had chiseled sharp points. They
looked like huge pencils. We never actually saw many people going up and down
on them, but Solomon assured us they did and that they (the sticks) were very
strong!
This is a new “suggestion” light going up. In a city with 5
million people, there are 6 traffic lights. All the ones we saw were either
being ignored, had a policeman directing traffic, or was broken.
Whomever sold/made this corregated metal is a very rich
person. It is the dominating landscape design of Addis. I’m pretty sure it
could be seen from space – there’s that much of it!
The majority of the vehicles run on Diesel fuel. Lots emit
piles and piles of black smoke. Earlier in the week, Ian had a sore throat. He
was convinced that he accidently took a deep breath of black smoke. So the rest
of the week every time a black smoke vehicle passed us, he held his breath and
warned us to do the same.
